Google TV in Canada Update #2

So interest seems higher than ever for Google TV in Canada, at least according to traffic on my blog, yet no news on when it is officially coming to Canada (Which really means when it will be integrated with traditional TV content providers and when some additional apps will become available).

Since the last update (Google TV in Canada Update #1) there is nothing really new with the technology, Google hasn't even updated their YouTube channel in the last two months, and I really believe that everything is hinging on the launch of the Google TV app store that was supposed to happen around CES.

On the usage front we are liking it more than every.  We cut our Bell TV bill in more than half and end up watching most of our regular TV online. Another win is that we are not worrying about DVRing the regular watched shows, when we want to watch them we just go on the TV channels website and watch it from there.  Most are close to HDTV quality and we never miss a show.

Another piece of advice from talking to people who also own Google TV is that the Logitech version seems to be preferred over Sony's as the full size keyboard that comes with the Logitech Revue is much better than Sony's controller like version.  If you want a full overview check out Google TV in Canada - A Primer.

I will keep you up to date as we continue to reduce our TV bills and as the product evolves / launches in Canada.

Have you been able to set up Netflix.ca to work on the Logitech Revue? I haven't been able to figure it out and would greatly appreciate any suggestions/tips! Thanks!

It worked for a couple of days at the start but now it doesn't. Not sure why and they haven't answered any emails that I have sent.

Hey Simon... I commented on another of your blog posts, but the Google TV thread is they reason I found you!

I am extremely interested in Google TV! Do you feel I should hold-off until Canadian content distributors are on board? Current adoption of Google TV would likely require an ISP move to a high or unlimited bandwidth provider. Would the "entire package" present itself from one of the content distributors with the introduction and support of Google TV, making a pre-mature switch redundent in the long run? Finally, can you provide any clarity to the "cloud"? Will it function as an online storage/PVR locker for anytime-anywhere access to recordings and personal video & pictures? (Similar to the local storage solution in the WD Live TV Hub)?

Exciting times. Isn't convergence wonderful!?!

Presently, Netflix.ca launches automatically if your google tv device is in canada, i.e. has canadian ip address. Unforturnately, you can't stream any content with it. You can login, access everything normally, but when you launch a video...it says the device is not able to stream from your "location", i.e. not supported in Canada. R. Karnes.

Steven - I was very happy with Google TV in Canada - the networks have not blocked any content and it still has a ton of value in the other gadgets. As for the DVR their is a google queue but it won't record - just lets you know when things are available online. You would still need a DVR for TV feeds.

Any more updates on why Netflix won't work on Google TV in Canada?

It worked for about a day and then they turned if off - my suggestion is to call and email them, if they get enough they will turn in on (to be honest I have grown bored of Netflix.ca's selection)...

Its been a long time since Google TV launched, i have been wanting to get this for a long time. I don't know why Google TV hasn't come to Canada yet... And I saw the Wiki of Google TV that, 'Google TV will arrive in Europe 2012.' This made me angry. I continued looking up about when it will come come, but nothing shows up. If you can please give an update of it, I'm tried looking up now.

Slightly off topic, but Netflix works for me on my Boxee Box. I do not have a Google TV yet. I could be wrong, but from what I've picked up, Boxee is more useful in Canada than Google/Apple TV, at least right now.
